Suma Beach Kilyos

Suma Beach Kilyos

Istanbul Property Suma Beach

Forget the clubs of the Bosphorus, Taksim bars and Karaköy’s hipsters, for the second consecutive summer, people go to Suma Beach, just 30 minutes outside of Istanbul.

Suma Beach is located in the Gümüşdere district of Kilyos on the Black Sea. By day there is a yellow sandy beach, hot and soft under foot. The beach is backed by rolling farmland of a green lusher than you might expect so close to Istanbul. The water is a clear blue, its waves steadily lapping the sloping shore. Yoga and Pilates classes, as well as workshops and aromatherapy massage are offered to those who want to aid their relaxation. For the rest, there are sunbeds to lie upon and parasols to shade beneath, taking it easy in preparation for a long night to come.

As the sun sets, the place takes on a different vibe, set back from the beach and entered via a wooden walkway is what just might be Istanbul’s coolest outdoor “club”. The trees are uplit in a multitude of colors, with reflective decor hanging from the branches. Strung between them are hammocks to relax in. DJs spin the latest tunes and a bar serves well-made cocktails as well as other drinks. The party goes on until daybreak.

The lighting was designed by two German artists who have created a masterpiece – trees are beautifully uplit and there are festoons of bare bulbs in a multitude of colors, whilst green lasers create patterns in the leafy canopy. The decor here uses recycled items that were found at the venue, old wooden cartwheels are dotted around and geometric reflective shapes hang from branches. There are also a few more surprising elements such as the naked mannequins and the stuffed toy-horses. Hammocks are hung liberally between the trees offering spots to relax, and soak it all in.

Suma Beach is a joint venture between Suma Han Space and Wake Up Call. Wake Up Call is without doubt one of Istanbul’s coolest clubs, and the influence is felt here, not least in the line-up. Club has been home to many big names from a spectrum of electronic music genres including: Tale Of Us, Adultnapper, Tone Of Arc, Mind Against, Matias Aguayo, Nhar, Saschienne, Chloe, Sascha Funke, Dixon, Wild Cats, No Regular Play, Kasper Bjorke, Henrik Schwarz, Art Department, Steffi and more.

The DJ’s play from a raised wooden and bamboo hut and the beats ring out as crystal clear as the sea. The smiling bar staff seem to enjoy themselves as much as the guests serving a selection of delicious cocktails, cold beers and soft drinks. As the sun rises, return to the beach to watch it re-emerge from the opposite direction, warming the souls of those still awake and marking the end of one of the best nights you’ll have this summer.
