Things to Do With Children in Istanbul

Discovery Sphere Planetarium

Istanbul’s first public stationary planetarium “Discovery Sphere” (Keşif Küresi) has been opened at the Rahmi M. Koç Museum on the grounds of Lengerhane.

A special projector at Discovery Sphere reflects visions of the sky at night time, casting amazing view of the stars and the Milky Way onto the walls of the sphere. The answers to questions such as: How can the stars and the Milky Way be seen without interference from city lights? How do the planets move? How can we find our direction by following the stars? Why are the nights longer in winter? Why does the moon change phase?…are answered with digital animation systems.

The Discovery Sphere was designed for educational purposes and has a diameter of 8 meters and is 5.5 meters high. It covers an area of 60 sq.mt and is open all year long during the regular visiting hours of Rahmi M. Koç Museum.

Discovery Sphere events will not only be limited to astrology but also will offer various shows that will attract the attention of adults as well as children. Educational animations varying from archeology to art will be organized in due course. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions on astrology to the on-site specialists.

Admission to the Discovery Sphere is 5 TL for adults and 3 TL for students. It is open between 10:00 and 17:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 19:00 on weekends; the museum is closed on Mondays.
