Istanbul’s Airports Keep Increasing Air Traffic

Waiting for the largest airport in the world to be completed before 2018, Istanbul’s two international airports increase plane traffic despite their overused capacity.

Atatürk Airport increased plane traffic by 12% in January of 2014 compared to January, 2013, while Sabiha Gökçen Airport increased by 38% ( international traffic by 14% and 43% respectively). This means Istanbul’s international airports handled 46,697 planes in January.

The two airports had even better figures for passenger traffic. Atatürk Airport had 15% increase while Sabiha Gökçen had 46% ( 16% and 52% for international passengers respectively). It means that the airports handled 5,709,210 passengers in one month (January 2014).

Atatürk Airport handled 51.320.875 passengers in 2013 and Sabiha Gökçen Airport handled 18.641.842 passengers, total of 69,962,717 passengers. 14% increase of Atatürk Airport and 27% of Sabiha Gökçen. Total of handled planes by Istanbul’s 2 international airports : 555,505…

Even though Atatürk Airport’s overused capacity has been spoken out for 2 years, Istanbul keeps breaking air traffic records parallel to its fast increasing international tourist figures. Number 6 city in the world with more than 10,000,000 international visitors.
